Biography
Mary Chase Jellison was born in September of 1844 in South Berwick, Maine in the Chase-Jellison Homestead. She was the 7th child of 10. Mary attended the local one-room school house #11. She traveled by train with her sister, Sarah, to Brooklyn, NY where they lived with her mother's brother, James Chase, a prosperous fur merchant. She was interested in drawing from an early age and went there to study art at the Parker Collegiate Institute. Her talent lead to a career working for Currier and Ives in New York during the Civil War. As an accomplished artist, Mary had her own lithographs produced. She died of tuberculosis May 9th, 1877 and is buried in the family cemetery on Emery's Bridge Road.
